5 Things You'll Know If You Had MySpace

More than a decade ago, before the days of Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram, everyone was enamored with the original social network: MySpace. It was the mark of our first steps into the world of social media. Take a look at some of the most interesting things about MySpace that only its users will know.

1) Your first friend on MySpace: Tom

Everyone’s first friend on MySpace was Tom, the platform’s co-founder. Apart from being the most loyal friend on your list, he also helped increase your overall friend count. While we have all drifted apart over the years, I’m sure what we had with Tom was special and real.

2) We all learned HTML just to make our profiles stand out

MySpace was more than a platform for communicating with friends. It served as an educational tool as well! Back then, if you really wanted your profile to look cool, you had to learn some HTML and brush up on your coding. There was nothing like a color-changing image or flashing badge to get your profile noticed.

3) Hint, hint: Who I’d Like to Meet aka I’d Like to Meet My Crush

MySpace allowed users to express their individuality by giving different categories that you could fill out with your own preferences. From books to heroes, to plans for the future, it was the first digital way to express one’s interests, including a “Who I’d Like to Meet” section which people often used to clue in their crush.

When MySpace launched in 2003, the internet was a far more innocent place than it is now. We’re all guilty of adding strangers with similar interests to us just to boost our friend count and make it seem like we’re the coolest cat on the internet. The worst thing that could happen is getting asked if they know you.

5) Arranging your top eight friends was cause for drama

You might have hundreds of friends on MySpace but you could only choose the top eight to show on your profile page. This led to situations between friends asking why they weren’t there or, if you did include them, why they were only number six. The ability to rank friends was more of a curse than a blessing.
