Six Memorable “Got Milk?” Ads From the 2000s

Britney Spears rose to prominence as a pop singer in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Though she was part of The Mickey Mouse Club in the late 1980s until the early 1990s, it wasn’t until the release of her albums ...Baby One More Time in 1999 and Oops!... I Did It Again in 2000 that she became a global superstar. Following her rise to fame, Britney appeared in a series of Got Milk? ads aimed at her adoring fans, many of whom were kids and teenagers.

Just like Britney Spears, Taylor Swift’s appearance in a Got Milk? ad coincided with her own rise to fame in the late 2000s. The 2008 ad, which features a young Taylor during her curly-haired, country singer phase, was released just as she was preparing for the November launch of her second album Fearless, which included hits such as Love Story and You Belong With Me. Taylor Swift’s impact on her young, adoring fans paved the way for her to be featured in another Got Milk? ad campaign in 2010.

Beyonce is one celebrity who needs no introduction – it’s hard to find anyone who doesn’t know at least a little about this award-winning singer, songwriter, and actress. Following her rise to fame as a member of Destiny’s Child and the group’s eventual break-up in 2006, Beyonce set out to begin her solo career. That same year, she appeared in a Got Milk? ad with her mother Tina, highlighting the importance of having a good role model. The ad was also a clever way for them to promote their House of Dereon clothing brand, which was launched that year.

Unlike the more restrained Got Milk? Ads that featured poised celebrities, iconic rock legend Steven Tyler added a unique flair to his ad by showcasing his rock lifestyle. His band Aerosmith, which produced hits from the 70s all the way into the 2000s, was added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, just a year before this ad was released.

In 2006, English professional football player David Beckham joined the list of celebrities with a Got Milk? ad. Beckham – the husband of the former Posh Spice Victoria Adams – was one of the most valuable football players of the time, second only to Ronaldinho.

As you might have noticed by now, some celebrities used their Got Milk? ads for a bit of self-promotion as well. While Beyonce promoted her now-defunct clothing line, Angelina Jolie dressed up as Lara Croft to promote her 2003 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life. The actress, filmmaker, and humanitarian showed off her figure in a black bikini, highlighting the effects of milk on one’s body.
